From Drawing to Delivery: Managing Multi-Process CNC Parts

One project can involve several processes. The buyer should still have one clear point of responsibility.

One Accountable Project Team

A complete order is more than machining one feature correctly

Many custom equipment parts move through turning or milling, heat treatment, grinding, surface finishing, inspection, marking and export packing before they are ready to install.

Every handoff creates a chance for the drawing revision, protected surface, critical dimension or delivery requirement to be misunderstood. HONMET manages the project from the approved technical basis through coordinated production and shipment preparation. Production is assigned to suitable long-term partner resources; HONMET remains the customer-facing contact for communication, requirements and follow-up.

This article describes HONMET's project-management approach. Exact processes, tolerances, documents and inspection methods are confirmed from each drawing and order.

1 · Drawing Review

Freeze the technical basis before production begins

A quote cannot replace engineering review. The drawing revision, 3D model, material, quantity and functional requirements need to describe the same part.

Revision

Confirm the current 2D drawing, 3D model and revision. Record any approved clarification instead of relying on chat history.

Critical features

Identify fits, datums, sealing faces, runout relationships and appearance surfaces that affect assembly.

Production stage

Separate prototype quantity, first production batch and repeat demand so the route fits the real purchasing plan.

Acceptance

Agree inspection documents, sample size, finish standard, labeling and packing requirements before release.

2 · Route Planning

Choose each process around the part—not around a sales list

A turned shaft with flats and cross holes may require turning plus milling. A hardened locating pin may need machining, heat treatment and grinding. A coated housing may need masking and a post-finish dimensional check. The correct sequence is part of the engineering decision.

HONMET reviews geometry, material, quantity and tolerance to coordinate an appropriate route. When several partner processes are involved, the customer does not need to manage separate suppliers for each operation.

3 · Handoff Control

Keep the same requirements visible between processes

Multi-process orders often fail at the transitions: a dimension changes after heat treatment, a critical bore is coated, or finished parts are mixed between revisions. A controlled project needs more than a purchase order sent to several shops.

01

Use one controlled drawing basis

Release the same approved revision to every operation and record subsequent clarifications.

02

Protect process-sensitive features

Define stock allowance, masking, thread protection and dimensions that apply after treatment.

03

Separate lots and revisions

Use part identification, containers and labels that prevent accepted pieces from being mixed with work in progress.

04

Keep one communication path

HONMET consolidates technical questions and delivery follow-up so the buyer can see who owns the next action.

4 · Inspection Evidence

Match the evidence to the feature and risk

Not every dimension needs the same instrument or report. Critical bores, positions, profiles, runout or surface roughness require methods suitable for their tolerance and function. General dimensions can follow an agreed sampling plan.

The inspection basis should state which characteristics are critical, when they are checked and what record the buyer expects. For repeat production, comparable records help reveal process drift between batches.

  • First-piece confirmation before the full batch
  • In-process control at risk-sensitive operations
  • Post-finish verification for affected dimensions
  • Final dimensional, visual and quantity checks
  • Agreed reports, material documents or certificates when required

5 · Packing & Delivery

The part is not finished until it is protected and identifiable

A correct part can still arrive unusable if precision surfaces rub together, threaded ends are exposed or different part numbers share one unmarked container. Packing requirements belong in the project plan.

Protection

Use separation, thread caps, corrosion protection or surface protection according to geometry and finish.

Identification

Label part number, revision, quantity and lot information according to the customer's receiving process.

Export preparation

Confirm carton or crate needs, document requirements, delivery address and transport risk before dispatch.

6 · RFQ Checklist

Send enough information to review the complete route

  • Controlled 2D drawing and available 3D model
  • Material grade and condition
  • Prototype, first-order and repeat quantities
  • Critical dimensions, fits, datums and functions
  • Heat treatment and surface-finish requirements
  • Inspection method and documentation needs
  • Appearance, masking and protected surfaces
  • Part marking, labeling and traceability
  • Packing and export-delivery requirements
  • Target date and final destination

A complete RFQ makes it possible to discuss the manufacturing sequence, open questions and inspection basis before cost and delivery expectations are fixed.
