CNC Shaft Sourcing Guide

How to Specify CNC Machined Shafts for Repeat Production

A shaft drawing must control the relationships that affect rotation, fit, load and assembly—not only list diameters and lengths.

Start With Function

A shaft is a system of related features

Bearing journals, shoulders, threads, keyways, grooves and flange interfaces may be produced in different operations, but they must still work from a common functional reference.

A drawing that treats every diameter independently can leave the supplier uncertain about what must remain concentric, which shoulder controls assembly and where runout should be measured. That uncertainty becomes more costly when the project moves from a first batch to repeat production.

This guide explains general engineering and sourcing considerations. Final material, tolerance, process and inspection decisions must follow the actual drawing and application.

1 · Application

Explain what the shaft does in the machine

The manufacturing and inspection plan changes depending on whether the part transmits torque, guides motion, locates a rotating assembly, supports a bearing or carries a threaded adjustment feature.

Rotating shaft

Identify operating speed, bearing locations, balance concerns and the surfaces whose runout affects motion.

Guide or support shaft

Define straightness, diameter fit, surface condition, support spacing and the mating linear bearing or bushing.

Threaded motion component

State the thread or lead specification, functional engagement, end features and how axial movement is verified.

2 · Datum Structure

Use the functional axis and locating faces as references

Choose datums according to how the shaft locates in the final assembly. For many rotating parts, a bearing journal or controlled center axis becomes the primary reference. A shoulder or flange face may then establish axial location.

  • Identify the primary rotational or guiding axis
  • Relate shoulders and flange faces to that axis
  • Locate cross holes, flats and keyways from functional datums
  • State whether features must be completed in one setup
  • Show where runout or concentricity is evaluated
3 · Fits & Geometry

Tighten the features that control performance

Applying a tight tolerance to every dimension increases inspection and production cost without automatically improving the assembly.

01

Bearing and bushing fits

Specify the actual mating component, fit class and whether the diameter is checked before or after finishing.

02

Runout and coaxial relationships

Define which journal, bore, thread or flange is controlled relative to the datum axis and where the indicator contacts the part.

03

Shoulders and axial location

Control the faces that locate bearings, spacers, seals or assembled components along the shaft.

04

Threads, keyways and cross holes

State thread class, keyway fit, edge-break requirements and positional relationships that affect assembly.

4 · Material & Finish

Record the complete material condition

The alloy name alone may not describe the required part. Material condition, hardness, heat treatment, straightening allowance and surface treatment can influence size, distortion, wear and corrosion resistance.

  • Specify grade, condition and certification requirements
  • Define heat treatment and acceptable hardness range
  • Identify ground, polished, coated or plated surfaces
  • State masking requirements for threads and bearing seats
  • Clarify which dimensions require inspection after treatment

5 · Inspection

Match the measurement method to the feature

A complete inspection plan names the characteristic, datum, measuring location, method and sampling requirement. The controlled drawing remains the authority.

6 · Repeat Production

Freeze the approved manufacturing basis

Before a repeat order, confirm that the approved drawing, material, treatment, inspection characteristics and packaging requirements remain unchanged. If the first batch required an approved deviation or drawing revision, that decision must be carried into the new order deliberately.

  • Approved drawing number and revision
  • Material, hardness and finishing specification
  • Critical features and agreed inspection records
  • First-article approval or accepted change notes
  • Part identification and protective packaging

Buyer Questions

Frequently asked questions about CNC machined shafts

These answers help machine builders prepare a clearer RFQ. The released drawing and application requirements remain the final authority.

What information should be included in a CNC shaft RFQ?

Provide the controlled 2D drawing, 3D model when available, material and condition, order quantity, annual forecast, surface treatment, mating components, critical fits, datum references, inspection records and packaging requirements.

Which shaft dimensions usually need the closest control?

The most important dimensions normally control bearing or bushing fit, rotation, sealing, torque transfer or axial location. Identify those functional relationships instead of applying the same tight tolerance everywhere.

How should shaft runout be specified?

Define the controlled feature, datum axis, measurement location and acceptance value. Also state whether the requirement applies before or after heat treatment, coating, grinding or another finishing operation.

What should be controlled for repeat shaft orders?

Keep the approved drawing revision, material condition, finishing specification, critical inspection characteristics, accepted deviations, part identification and protective packaging consistent between orders.

Can HONMET review a shaft drawing before quotation?

Yes. Send the drawing package, quantity, application and inspection requirements so the appropriate manufacturing route and quotation basis can be reviewed.

Have a Shaft Drawing to Review?

Send the 2D drawing, 3D model, material, first-order quantity, repeat forecast and the features that control fit or motion.
